Nice tounge-in-cheek article that does give some insight to the working jazz world, but also confuses the reader to wonder what is fact and what is satire. The only hope is that those who read this will, in fact, seek out someone knowledgeable in the field to explain it to them.

For those that don't know, we are a combination of all of these. For instance, I'll take any gig that pays like the 'Gig whore,' (BTW - ALL gigs are getting more and more scarce by the minute!) but I also have a corporate day gig and an advanced degree in jazz, like the Career Professional. I don't think I know any Epiphytes, as even the most stolid of them still takes pop gigs to survive, which is the name of the game anyway.

I think the one thing the casual reader needs to take away from this is that live music is facing extinction in today's economy. If you see ANYONE that is both lucky enough to have a gig playing in public somewhere, and has the guts to put his/her wares out for display to the world, well pay attention. It may be your last chance. I hope I'm wrong about that.

The author has grabbed me after just the first page. Fellow musicians should read this.
